Types of Motor Insurance
Third Party
Third Party, Fire and Theft
Fully Comprehensive Insurance
Third Party
This is the legal minimum insurance you must have to drive in the UK.
It's the cheapest because it doesn't cover you, only other "third parties" involved in any accident.
If you could prove that the other driver was at fault then you might be able to claim damages from their insurers. However your insurer wouldn't pay you.
Third Party, Fire and Theft
This adds on protection from fire and theft (doh!)
Fully Comprehensive Insurance
This covers you no matter what and so costs more than the others. Most people opt for it because of the peace of mind it brings. You'd be foolish not to get it if you're buying a new or nearly new car.
